Really, this is brilliant.

Our industry has collectively taught average people over the last few decades that computers should be feared and are always a single misstep from breaking. We?ve trained them to expect the working state to be fragile and temporary, and experience from previous upgrades has convinced them that they shouldn?t mess with anything if it works. They?ve learned to ignore our pressures to always get the latest versions of everything because our upgrades frequently break their software and workflow. They expect unreliable functionality, shoddy software workmanship, unnecessary complexity, broken promises from software marketers, and degrading hostility from their office?s IT staff.

It also had me in tears last night.

I was sniffling through the whole thing, but this is the shining moment:

The woman at my polling place asked me do I believe in equality for gay and lesbian people. I was pretty surprised to be asked a question like that. It made no sense to me. Finally I asked her: what do you think I fought for in Omaha Beach?

On a related note: Yes, there can and have been two kings at a time.

Valued T-Mobile Sidekick customers received a notice today from the company updating them on the “data disruption” problem. The good news is that data is no longer being disrupted. The bad news is that there is no data left to be disrupted. (link)

That sound? Me running a backup. Right now.

So there’s been quite a lot of wank lately about wordpress and it’s security and/or lack thereof. It goes a little bit like this:

Random Blog Owner: My blog has been hacked. Noooo!

Random Tech Person #1: Well, that’s what you get for using wordpress.

Random WP evangelist: No no no… it’s RBO’s own fault. They didn’t keep up with the security patches.

RTP #1: Hrmph. REAL blogging software doesn’t need to be patched every month.

Creaky dino-blogger: Back in my day, we didn’t even have software! We coded and posted everything by hand. Uphill! In the snow! Both ways!

Random Tech Person #2: Non-techies shouldn’t be hosting their own blogs. Go get a hosted account with LiveJournal or DreamWidth or Blogger or wordpress.com or (insert other hosted service here).

Lather, rinse, repeat. Am tired of this already.

iMindi wants to be a Twitter on steroids. Actually, it is the exact opposite of Twitter. It is more for people who want to have lengthy discussions and explore topics deeply. Instead of a 140-character limit, it has a 20,000-character limit. (via TechCrunch)

And this is different from a hosted blog how?
